Bioluminescence
Bioluminescence is the production of light from living organisms. It is seen in a wide variety of life forms, from plants and animals to fungi and bacteria. Bioluminescence has many important uses – from helping plants to attract insects for pollination to aiding deep-sea fish in camouflage and communication. In humans, bioluminescence is used in medical diagnostics, for example for detecting certain bacteria or viruses. Its use in biomedical imaging is key to understanding how the body works since light is a non-invasive imaging tool. Its use in research has also led to a better understanding of the evolution of species, and applications in biotechnology. Aside from its scientific uses, bioluminescence has become an increasingly popular topic in popular culture, inspiring books, films, games, and art.
