Atolls
Atolls are circular or elliptical coral formations which rise from the seafloor and encircle a lagoon. They are typically found in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world and are well known for their white-sandy beaches and crystal clear lagoons. Atolls are made up of millions of years’ worth of coral growth and provide safe habitats for many species of fish, birds and marine mammals. They are also significant resources of economic products and are important sources of food and income for many coastal communities. In addition, atolls are valuable sites for scientific research and play a key role in mitigating global climate change and sea-level rise.
