Aplysia
californica Aplysia californica, also known as the Californian Sea Hare, is a large, herbivorous sea slug found primarily on the North American Pacific coast. It is an important organism in the study of neuroscience, due to its simple and easily accessible nervous system. Aplysia californica has been used for research in the areas of neural plasticity, learning and memory. Its large neurons and robust nervous system are well-suited for research in these areas. Furthermore, Aplysia californica's long-term memory has been studied extensively, which has been important for understanding how memory is stored and retrieved in the human brain. In addition, Aplysia californica is a model organism as it has a broad diet, is easy to keep in captivity, and has a short life cycle. These qualities make it an ideal species for laboratory research.
