Actinopterygii are a group of fish and aquatic life that consists of over 27,000 species in more than 500 families. This group of fish is characterized by the presence of a single bony internal median fin, and is the largest group of vertebrates. Actinopterygii typically inhabit freshwater, brackish, and marine environments. They are an important part of the aquatic food web, providing food for many other species. They also play a role in maintaining the health of aquatic ecosystems by filtering and cycling nutrients. Actinopterygii are also a popular source of food for humans, and have some recreational and commercial value as a recreational fish for anglers.
