Urticarial Vasculitis

Urticarial vasculitis is a type of skin inflammation which involves the blood vessels of the skin. It is characterised by red to purple itchy bumps and hives that can range in size from a few millimetres to a few centimetres. It is usually considered to be an autoimmune condition caused by the body's immune system attacking its own blood vessels. Urticarial vasculitis can be a sign of underlying medical condition, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and inflammatory bowel disease. Treatment can include medications to reduce inflammation and itch, or systemic steroids. Early diagnosis and treatment can help to prevent long-term skin damage.
