Kawasaki Disease
Kawasaki Disease is an acute multisystem inflammatory syndrome which primarily affects infants and children under the age of 5. It is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children in the developed world. Symptoms include fever, rash, conjunctivitis, inflammation of the lips and tongue, and swollen hands and feet. It can be treated with a combination of aspirin and intravenous immunoglobulin but, if left untreated, the disease can result in serious heart problems, including cardiomyopathy, coronary artery aneurysms and potential heart failure. Early detection and treatment is essential to prevent long-term damage and potentially life-threatening complications. As such, Kawasaki Disease is an important condition for parents, health professionals, and researchers to be aware of.
