Thoracolumbar Fracture

A Thoracolumbar fracture is a break in the vertebral column (spine) between the thoracic spine and lumbar spine. It is usually caused by high-energy trauma, such as a car accident, fall or direct blow to the back, and can result in severe back pain, numbness or paralysis of the lower limbs. Treatment depends on the severity of the fracture, but typically involves immobilization with a brace or cast, medications, and sometimes surgery to correct the alignment of the vertebrae and stabilize fractures. Thoracolumbar fractures can be extremely serious, with potential for long-term disability, so it is important to seek prompt medical care if you think you may have one.
