Pulmonary Function Tests
Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are a group of tests that measure how well a person's lungs are able to take in and release air and other gases, such as oxygen. They are used to diagnose and evaluate lung diseases, and to guide decisions about treatment. The tests measure several indicators of lung function, including lung volume, gas exchange, and airway obstruction. In addition, they can provide insight into a person's general health and help physicians to monitor a person's response to treatment. PFTs are critical for diagnosing and managing a wide range of pulmonary diseases, from asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to lung cancer and pulmonary fibrosis.
