Hepatocytes
Hepatocytes are the primary type of cell in the liver, representing around 80% of liver mass. They perform various critical functions including detoxification of substances, metabolism of dietary nutrients, storage of vitamins and other cofactors, and production of bile to help with digestion. In addition, they are important for regulating glucose, lipid, and energy metabolism in the body. Liver disease, alcohol abuse, and drug toxicity can all lead to damage to these cells, which can have adverse impacts on liver function and can even lead to death. Thus, maintaining healthy hepatocyte function is essential for overall health.
