Ostomy
Ostomy is a surgical procedure in which an opening (stoma) is created between the bowel and the skin, so the waste (stool) can be directly eliminated through the opening. It is used in cases when the normal evacuation of waste through the rectum is not possible or recommended. It can be a life-saving treatment for patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease, colon or rectal cancer, or other conditions that interfere with the normal functioning of the intestine. Ostomy has also been used in patients with birth defects or after trauma and accidents. The benefits of a successful ostomy are improved health and quality of life, as well as long-term independence and mobility of the patient.
