Structural Enzymology

Structural enzymology is the study of enzymes, proteins which act as catalysts in chemical reactions. It focuses on understanding the relationship between the 3-dimensional structure of the enzyme and its function. This knowledge has enabled researchers to develop more efficient and specific drugs, as well as to design novel enzymes for biotechnological purposes. It has had a major impact in the fields of biochemistry, organic chemistry and immunology, to name a few. Structural enzymology is a rapidly growing field which continues to generate new insights into the fascinating world of proteins.
