Hypercortisolism
Hypercortisolism, also known as Cushing’s Syndrome, is a condition caused by the overproduction of the hormone cortisol by the adrenal glands. This hormone is essential for the body to respond to stress, regulate metabolism and control inflammation. However, in cases of Hypercortisolism, too much cortisol is produced, causing a range of physical and psychological symptoms, including weight gain, tiredness, depression and high blood pressure. Hypercortisolism is usually caused by long-term use of steroid medication, or a tumor on one of the adrenal glands. Treatment includes medications that target the underlying cause, and lifestyle changes to help reduce cortisol levels. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to managing the condition and preventing serious complications.
