Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a protozoan parasite, Trichomonas vaginalis. This can affect both men and women, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. In women, common symptoms include itching and irritation of the genitals, a foul-smelling vaginal discharge, and pain during urination. In men, symptoms may include itching and irritation of the urethra and sometimes painful urination. If left untreated, trichomoniasis can increase the risk of HIV transmission, as well as the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight in pregnant women. Treatment involves antibiotics and can be done with a single dose or with multiple doses over time. It is important to note that all sexual partners should be treated in order to completely cure the infection. By understanding how trichomoniasis is transmitted, how to recognize its signs and symptoms, and how to treat it, individuals can protect themselves from this potentially serious STI.
