Trachoma

Trachoma is a bacterial infection of the eye that can lead to vision loss if left untreated. It is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis and is the leading cause of infectious blindness worldwide. It is most common in areas with inadequate water and sanitation, and is spread by contact with infected secretions from the eyes, nose or throat. Treatment involves antibiotics and improved hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing and improvements in access to clean water. Prevention strategies include improved sanitation, contact tracing, and health education. Trachoma is a major global health concern and the World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a global strategy for its elimination by the year 2020.
