Post Ssri Sexual Dysfunction
Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD) is a condition in which a person experiences sexual dysfunction as a result of taking Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). It can present itself in the form of a reduced libido, lack of orgasm, penile/vaginal anorgasmia, and/or genital anesthesia. PSSD has been increasingly reported over the last few decades, with many potential underlying causes, such as an alteration in serotonin neurotransmission, neuroplasticity, and/or a disruption of neurosteroids. It is seen to have significant impact on a person’s well-being, quality of life, and self-esteem. It is important to remember that treatments usually used for other forms of sexual dysfunction, such as PDE-5 inhibitors and hormonal treatments, are not effective for PSSD. However, treatment options exist, such as the use of certain medications, psychotherapy, and lifestyle modifications. It is important to recognize the condition and be aware of potential treatments to ensure better quality of life for those affected by it.
