Inability to Relax Vaginal Muscles Enough to Allow Intercourse
Inability to relax vaginal muscles enough to allow intercourse is a medical condition known as vaginismus. This condition can cause significant distress in relationships and can be a source of psychological and physical discomfort. Vaginismus occurs when the muscles surrounding the vagina involuntarily spasm and contract, making penetration during intercourse impossible or painful. Symptoms may include feeling a burning sensation, pain or an intense feeling of tightness during intercourse; pelvic pain or cramping during or between sexual activity, and anxiety or fear when sexual activity is attempted. Vaginismus treatment may include pelvic floor physical therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and self-management strategies such as Kegel exercises. With appropriate treatment, many people can manage their symptoms and enjoy pain-free sexual intercourse.
