HIV/AIDS
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) are two related conditions that have had a great impact on the health of people around the world. HIV is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, which is responsible for fighting off infections and diseases. The virus can be spread through unprotected sexual contact, sharing needles, or from mother to child during pregnancy, birth, or while breastfeeding. AIDS is the later stage of HIV infection, when the immune system is severely weakened and unable to fight off infections and diseases. Without treatment, persons living with HIV can progress to AIDS and die. However, with proper care and antiretroviral therapy, individuals can live a healthy life with HIV or AIDS. Therefore, considerable progress has been made in fighting HIV/AIDS, although there is still more work to be done.
