Orchiectomy

An orchiectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of one or both testicles. It is used for a variety of medical purposes, including the treatment of testicular cancer, gynecomastia (enlargement of the male breasts), and as a gender-affirming surgery for transgender individuals. The procedure is most often performed as a minimally invasive laparoscopic operation under general anesthesia, resulting in a shorter recovery time and fewer complications than traditional open orchiectomy. Additionally, it can be used as an irreversible form of contraception in some cases. The importance of the orchiectomy procedure is that it can help to eliminate cancerous or other unwanted tissue, improve gender dysphoria, control the development of estrogen-associated side effects, and provide an alternative form of contraception.
