Patellofemoral Pain
Syndrome Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) is a common form of knee pain that affects millions of people worldwide. It is caused by irritation of the patella—the kneecap—where it rests on the thighbone. This irritation can cause severe discomfort and can limit movement. Symptoms of PFPS include pain around and behind the kneecap, swelling, decreased range of motion and a grinding sensation when bending and straightening the knee. It can be caused by a repetitive strain injury, injury, high-intensity physical activity or weak quadriceps muscles. To treat PFPS, rest, activity modification, stretching and strengthening exercises, bracing and physical therapy are recommended. Proper diagnosis and treatment of PFPS can help prevent long-term complications and restore movement.
