Pain Catastrophizing

Pain catastrophizing is a psychological phenomenon in which an individual experiences a high degree of distress and anxiety when faced with pain. It is associated with a negative cognitive-affective response towards pain and has been linked to greater emotional and physical distress, greater disability, and poorer clinical outcomes. Pain catastrophizing has been studied in a variety of chronic pain conditions, including fibromyalgia, chronic musculoskeletal pain, and chronic low back pain, and has been identified as a key psychological factor influencing pain intensity and management. It has been used as a target for cognitive interventions to improve the experience of pain, reduce physical and psychological distress, and improve clinical outcomes in a variety of chronic pain conditions.
