Pain Asymbolia
Pain asymbolia is a neurological condition in which a person has the experience of pain without physical stimulation. This condition can be especially disabling since a person may feel pain even when there is no external source of pain. It can also lead to significant psychological distress and lead to difficulties in adapting to a daily routine. Pain asymbolia is not well understood, but research has suggested that it may be related to changes in the brain’s sensory processing or to an abnormality in the brain’s pain pathways. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of this condition is important in order to develop treatments and interventions to reduce or manage pain asymbolia and its associated distress.
