Water Pollution
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies such as rivers, lakes, oceans, and groundwater by harmful materials such as chemicals, untreated sewage, and other pollutants. Pollution of water resources can have serious effects on the environment, human health, and the economy. It can contaminate drinking water, create hazardous habitats for aquatic wildlife, reduce agricultural crop yields, and interfere with recreational activities. The most common water pollution sources are agricultural runoff, urban stormwater runoff, industrial wastewater release, oil spills, and untreated sewage. Strategies to reduce water pollution include improving wastewater treatment, reducing carbon emissions from fossil fuels, controlling agricultural and industrial runoff, and developing green infrastructure.
