Overview

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble secosteroid that functions as a prohormone, existing principally as vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). It is synthesised in skin upon ultraviolet exposure and obtained from diet, then converted in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the main circulating form used to assess status, and activated in the kidney to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, which acts through the vitamin D receptor to regulate gene expression. Its best-established role is in calcium and phosphate homeostasis and bone mineralisation, but vitamin D also influences immune function, muscle performance, and cellular proliferation. Deficiency, indicated by low 25-hydroxyvitamin D, is associated with impaired bone health, falls, and a range of clinical conditions. Nutrition and clinical research evaluate vitamin D status across populations and disease states, including chronic liver disease, infection, and oral and systemic disorders, and examine supplementation strategies, cost-effectiveness of assessment-based versus systematic supplementation, and effects on bone parameters in cellular models. Studies also address vitamin D in relation to ageing, micronutrient deficiency, and immune and antioxidant function. Measurement and correction of vitamin D status are recurring themes. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on vitamin D metabolism, status assessment, deficiency, and supplementation across nutritional and clinical contexts.
