Overview

Eating disorders are a group of psychiatric conditions characterised by persistent disturbances in eating behaviour and in the perception of body weight and shape, with serious consequences for physical and mental health. Recognised diagnoses include anorexia nervosa, marked by restriction of intake and low body weight; bulimia nervosa, defined by binge eating followed by compensatory behaviours; and binge-eating disorder, involving recurrent loss-of-control eating without regular compensation; related presentations such as orthorexia nervosa reflect a preoccupation with dietary purity. These disorders arise from an interplay of genetic, neurobiological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, and they frequently co-occur with anxiety, depression, and other mental-health conditions, illustrating the close link between disordered eating and psychological well-being. They carry substantial medical morbidity, including nutritional, metabolic, and gastrointestinal complications, and require integrated nutritional and psychological management. Nutrition and health research examines disordered-eating attitudes and quality of life, dietary regimens and nutritional rehabilitation, the influence of body image and eating behaviour on nutritional status, and the broader relationship between diet, the gut-brain axis, and mental health. Assessment, prevention, and multidisciplinary treatment are central concerns. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on eating behaviour, nutritional aspects of eating disorders, and the intersection of nutrition and mental health.
