Nervous System Functions
The nervous system is the complex network of cells, organs, and nerves that control the body's cognitive and physical functions. It is responsible for receiving sensory input, processing and sending information to the brain, and controlling bodily responses. It consists of the central nervous system (CNS) composed of the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) composed of nerves that connect the CNS to other parts of the body. It is essential for all physical and mental activities, from respiration and digestion, to cognition and emotion. Without the nervous system, an individual would be unable to see, hear, feel, or move. The nervous system is a critical part of the body’s ability to respond and adapt to the environment. As such, it has a great influence on overall health and wellbeing.
