Endovascular Management of Stroke
Endovascular management of stroke is a treatment option for patients with ischemic stroke, in which a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel to remove a clot from the artery leading to the brain. It is minimally invasive, and offers a shorter hospital stay and a more favorable outcome for many patients compared to more traditional treatments. Endovascular management of stroke is a rapidly evolving field with increasing evidence suggesting its efficacy. This technique is particularly useful for those patients who are not eligible for clot-dissolving medications due to a time window or contraindications. It is also used to place stents and other devices within the cerebral vasculature to improve blood flow and decrease the risk of further strokes. Endovascular management of stroke has the potential to reduce long-term disability in stroke patients and may be a life-saving intervention in some cases.
