Diffusion MR Imaging
Diffusion MR imaging is a type of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique used in medical imaging. This technique exploits the physical properties of water molecules to measure the extent and direction of their diffusion within tissues. Diffusion MR imaging is useful in the diagnosis of tissue diseases and to identify tumor boundaries as well as in the study of normal brain development. It is also useful in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal, cardiac, and neurological diseases. Additionally, Diffusion MR imaging can be used to measure the extent of injury in trauma, evaluate the integrity of the blood-brain barrier, and provide information about the structural integrity of brain tissue. This imaging technique is especially advantageous for detecting changes in tissues and organs that otherwise would be difficult to detect.
