Neonatal Surgery
Neonatal surgery is a specialized field of surgery that focuses on treating and caring for newborns who need surgical intervention. The surgeries performed on neonates are usually performed to treat a congenital defect, birth defect, or an injury that occurs shortly after birth. Neonatal surgery can involve a wide range of procedures, including: repairing organs that may have not formed properly, repairing defects in the chest wall, repairing certain abdominal wall defects, repairing certain gastrointestinal issues, and birth marks. The importance of neonatal surgery can not be understated. Surgical intervention can provide life-saving treatments for newborns who are suffering from a wide range of medical conditions. The early detection and proper treatment of these issues can help improve their quality of life and their chances of survival. Additionally, timely intervention may also prevent long term medical sequelae commonly associated with these conditions. As such, neonatal surgeons play a vital role in providing quality care to newborns and their families.
