Neonatal Mortality
Neonatal mortality is the death of an infant within 28 days of birth. It is a significant public health concern globally as an estimated 4.1 million newborns died in 2018. Causes of neonatal mortality include infections, complications of preterm birth, birth asphyxia, and congenital malformations and abnormalities. Thus, the reduction of neonatal mortality requires a multidisciplinary public health approach including improved access to antenatal services and skilled birth attendance, access to safe water and hygiene, and access to newborn-specific care and treatments.
