Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia
Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is a common condition in newborns in which the level of bilirubin, a yellow pigment present in bile, is abnormally high in the blood. It is caused by an imbalance between the production and metabolism of bilirubin, usually due to an immature liver. It is a serious condition that can lead to brain damage if left untreated. Treatment typically involves the use of phototherapy, to break down the bilirubin, and exchange transfusion, to reduce the amount of bilirubin in the blood. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential in preventing serious health consequences.
