Neonatal Dermatology

Neonatal dermatology is the branch of dermatology, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases or skin ailments in newborn babies. It is a specialised field as the skin of an infant is different to that of an adult. Neonatal skin is much thinner and more easily damaged, making it vulnerable to rashes, infections, birthmarks and skin conditions such as eczema. Early diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions in newborns is important. It helps to prevent serious complications, such as infection and scarring, and can help improve a baby’s overall health and well-being. Neonatal dermatologists are often consulted if a parent notices a rash or a skin condition in their newborn baby. By diagnosing and treating skin conditions in newborns, neonatal dermatologists can help improve the quality of life of the baby and its family.
