Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis
Primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) is a chronic, disabling neurological condition characterized by a gradual increase in disability without any relapses or remissions. PPMS is less common than its more typical relapsing-remitting counterpart, but it still affects an estimated 10-15% of patients with multiple sclerosis. Symptoms of PPMS typically include physical mobility problems like spasticity, weakness, and balance difficulties, as well as behavioral and cognitive changes. Treatment of PPMS involves using medications and other therapies to reduce symptoms, slow disease progression, and improve overall quality of life. For some patients, rehabilitative therapy can improve their ability to participate in activities of daily living. Research is continuing to explore the causes, diagnosis, and treatments for PPMS.
