Neuromyelitis Optica
Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a rare neurological condition that affects the spinal cord and optic nerves. Symptoms of NMO include inflammation of the optic nerves (optic neuritis), paralysis and problems with sensation, bladder and bowel control, and fatigue. The most common form of NMO is called "Devic's disease." NMO can be difficult to diagnose and is often mistaken for multiple sclerosis (MS). The distinguishing factor between NMO and MS is the presence of autoantibodies in the NMO patient’s blood, which are not found in the MS patient. Treatment of NMO often involves a combination of medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle management. Early diagnosis and treatment of NMO can help to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
