Melanomas
Melanomas are a type of skin cancer that form when the melanin-forming cells in the skin grow and divide abnormally. This can lead to potential life-threatening tumors and other related medical complications. Early detection is key, as melanomas are most effectively treated when detected early. Signs of possible melanoma include the appearance of a new mole or the change in color, shape, or size of a pre-existing mole. Common methods of early detection include skin exams, self-skin checks, and dermoscopy. Treatment for melanomas depends on the stage at diagnosis, and may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy. By knowing the signs of melanoma, and taking preventative measures, we can all become more proactive about our skin health.
