Glatiramer Acetate
Glatiramer acetate (also known as Copaxone) is an injectable drug used to treat multiple sclerosis (MS). It is a synthetic peptide composed of four amino acids (glutamic acid, lysine, alanine, and tyrosine) and acts as an immunomodulator, meaning it helps to regulate the immune system. Its significance lies in its ability to reduce the frequency and severity of MS relapses and to slow down the progression of the disease. Additionally, it is known to reduce inflammation in the brain, leading to improved neurological function. Glatiramer acetate can also be used to treat chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO).
