Diplopia
Diplopia, commonly known as double vision, is the perception of two images of a single object. It is a symptom of a wide range of underlying disorders, and is caused by abnormal binocular vision (visual input from both eyes) or abnormal muscle control. The diagnosis of diplopia requires careful evaluation of the individual’s vision and muscle control, as well as imaging or visual assessment. Treatment typically involves addressing the underlying cause, such as correcting refractive error with glasses, reducing muscle imbalance through physical therapy, or medical treatment for neurological disorders. Diplopia can cause immense distress and is associated with an increased risk of falls, reduced visual performance, and decreased quality of life. Early diagnosis and treatment is key to reducing these risks and restoring the individual’s ability to function normally.
