Medical Humanities and Bioethics
Medical humanities and bioethics is an interdisciplinary field that combines biomedical ethical approaches with areas of study such as history, literature, art, and philosophy. It is important in the evaluation of ethical issues in health care, such as end-of-life decision-making, patient autonomy, access to health care, patient safety and research ethics. Through maintaining an awareness of the cultural, psychological, and social significance of health and disease, medical humanities and bioethics helps to provide a more holistic approach to medicine and healthcare. It can also help to improve the patient-provider relationship, foster empathy and understanding among health professionals, and provide an understanding of ethical principles and how to apply them in practice.
