Genetics and Genomics

Genetics and genomics are sciences that study the structure and function of the genetic material of living organisms. Genetics is the study of how traits are inherited by organisms from their parents, and genomics is the study of the structure and functioning of an entire genome, including the study of the interaction of genes with their environment. This understanding is used in many areas, such as medical and agricultural research and development, to help diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases; develop efficient methods of food production, such as aquaculture and crop science; and provide insights into the evolution of humans and other species. In addition, genetics and genomics are used to understand and predict a wide range of phenomena in biology, from the development of specific traits in an organism to the spread of infectious diseases.
