Sterols
Sterols are a group of medications classified as lipids, which are naturally-occurring within the body. They are important components of cell membranes and are necessary for optimal health. Some sterols, such as cholesterol, are used by the body in the production of hormones and other compounds; others, such as beta-sitosterol, can be found in plants and are taken as a supplement. They are believed to help reduce cholesterol levels and may be beneficial in the prevention and treatment of heart disease, stroke, and other ailments related to atherosclerosis. Additionally, sterols are being studied for their ability to modulate immune system responses, promote healthy lipid metabolism, reduce inflammation, and act as prebiotics to support gut health. As such, they are increasingly being incorporated into dietary supplements, functional foods, and medical treatments.
