Mycetoma
Mycetoma is a chronic, infectious fungal disease that is most commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions. This disease affects the skin and subcutaneous tissue and is often characterized by nodules with discharging sinuses, leading to severe disability, deformity and economic hardship. Mycetoma is caused by a variety of fungal, bacterial and yeast-like organisms, and effective treatment is often delayed due to its rarity and the lack of awareness and education on the disease. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for improving the prognosis and overall outcome of this condition. Treatment options include antifungal, antibacterial, immunosuppressive and surgical therapies. Educating physicians and the public on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of mycetoma is essential in improving health outcomes and reducing the burden of the disease on individuals and communities.
