Membrane Metabolism
Membrane metabolism describes the process by which molecules and ions pass in and out of a cell’s plasma membrane, also known as the cell membrane. Through this process, biological cells are able to receive necessary nutrients and eliminate waste products, and ultimately maintain homeostasis. This process is essential for maintaining the balance of a cell’s internal environment in order to perform the cell’s normal functions. Membrane metabolism also plays a key role in metabolic pathways that enable cells to use metabolic pathways to break down materials and create useful products. Thus, membrane metabolism is important for the survival and functioning of biological cells.
