Lp(a)

lipid Lp(a) is a lipid, or fat molecule, found in the blood and is linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The protein component of the Lp(a) molecule binds it to LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol and helps it accumulate in the walls of the coronary arteries. Higher levels of Lp(a) are associated with plaque formation in the arteries and can lead to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Diagnosis of Lp(a) requires a specialized blood test, and treatment may include lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet and exercising, as well as medications. Monitoring of Lp(a) levels is important for people at risk for or already diagnosed with cardiovascular disease.
