Benthic Fauna

Benthic fauna are animals that make their home in the benthic zone, which is the layer of water between the surface and the seafloor. Benthic fauna includes a diverse array of organisms such as crustaceans, mollusks, worms, and fish. They play an important role in marine ecosystems as they are part of the food chain and provide food sources for many other animals. They also provide habitat and refuge for fish and other organisms, regulate nutrient levels and water quality in the surrounding environment, and provide a multipurpose platform for research and understanding of marine biodiversity. As such, benthic fauna is a vital component of the marine environment and should be monitored and studied in order to ensure their continued survival and the preservation of their habitats.
