Bacterioplankton

Bacterioplankton are tiny organisms that are floating in ocean and freshwater habitats. They are important components of aquatic ecosystems and are responsible for numerous biochemical processes that cycle vital elements such as carbon and nitrogen. Bacterioplankton play an essential role in the global carbon cycle by using sunlight to convert dissolved carbon dioxide into organic carbon. This process is important for the production of oxygen and for the maintenance of a balanced and healthy aquatic environment. In addition, bacterioplankton provide a food source for many organisms, including fish and other higher-level organisms. As such, their presence is essential for the health of aquatic habitats and the species that inhabit them.
