Wegener Granulomatosis
Wegener Granulomatosis (also known as Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis) is a rare, autoimmune disease that affects the small and medium-sized vessels in the body. It is an inflammatory disorder that can cause damage to major organs such as the lungs, kidneys, and sinuses. Wegener Granulomatosis is considered a multi-system disease because it can affect multiple organ systems. Common symptoms include coughing, difficulty breathing, fever, joint pain, and eye inflammation. Treatment options include medications that suppress the immune system and surgery to remove damaged areas. Without treatment, this disorder can be fatal. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential in order to prevent serious, long-term complications. Wegener Granulomatosis can affect anyone, however, it is more common in Caucasian males between the ages of 40 and 65.
