Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome
(SIRS) Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) is an acute medical condition that triggers a complex chain reaction of the body’s immune system. It is often the result of an infection or injury, and its main purpose is to combat bacteria or other infection sources. The syndrome is characterized by increased body temperature, increased heart rate, increased breathing rate and increased white blood cell count. It also increases the levels of some hormones and increases inflammation throughout the body. SIRS plays an important role in helping to protect the body from harm, but if not treated properly, it can cause serious complications. Proper medical care and treatment is essential to manage and treat this potentially fatal condition.
