Peritonitis
Peritonitis is a serious condition caused by inflammation of the peritoneum, the thin tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen and covers most of the organs within it. It occurs when bacteria, fungi or viruses enter the abdominal cavity and cause an infection. Symptoms of peritonitis include severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever and a rapid heart rate. Treatment usually involves intravenous antibiotics and surgery to remove any infected tissue. If left untreated, it can become life-threatening. Peritonitis requires prompt medical attention and is considered a medical emergency. Early diagnosis and treatment can result in a full recovery.
