Listeria
Listeria is a genus of foodborne bacteria that can cause serious illness. It is found in soil, water, sewage, and in animal and plant material. Outbreaks of listeriosis, a foodborne infection caused by Listeria, occur worldwide, though it is most commonly seen in areas with high food-processing activity. Listeriosis can cause meningitis, stillbirth, abortion, and severe infection in the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. To reduce the risk of listeriosis, food should be cooked thoroughly and properly stored. Food safety procedures and good hygiene practices should also be followed.
