It is a specialty which combines the knowledge of biochemistry, physiology, and pathology with that of clinical practice, enabling internal medicine physicians to not only diagnose and treat a variety of ailments, but also to provide comprehensive care for all sorts of medical problems. Internal medicine physicians are uniquely trained in the management of complex issues, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and infectious diseases, and are often called upon to lead health care teams.
