Insulitis

Insulitis is a type of inflammation of the pancreas. It is caused by an autoimmune disorder, in which the body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks the pancreas, resulting in abnormal destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells. The ensuing reduction of insulin production can lead to a range of metabolic disorders, such as diabetes mellitus, and also other potentially serious complications. Early detection and treatment of insulitis is important for the successful management of diabetes, as well as for preventing other serious health consequences, such as heart disease and stroke. The most effective way to diagnose insulitis is through CT scans, MRI and ultrasound. Treatment typically involves immunosuppressive drugs, insulin replacement therapy and lifestyle modifications.
